Petition to Stop The Issuance of the Green Beret To Non SF Units

The Green Beret, sanctified by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, is treated

as sacred in their ranks. It is given as a reward for excellence in training

and accomplishment in battle. The beret is coveted by many and worn proudly by only a few.

“The 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade is not Army Special Forces, and they are not Green Berets.  Unless someone has gone through the training, through the qualifications and assigned to U.S. Army Special Forces, they are not, and should not, wear the Green Beret.”

Green Beret

The United States Army has designed and trained a new “specialized” unit known as the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade whose core mission is to advise and assist the training of foreign partner military forces in counter-terrorism and host nation security operations.

The U.S. taxpayers spent millions of dollars for the U.S. Army to develop this new unit and capabilities. The problem is, this mission and a unit designed to conduct these mission already exists.

They are known as the elite U.S. Army Special Forces, or “The Green Berets”

The 1st SFAB command has stolen our heritage by co-opting the legendary “Recondo” patch from our Vietnam era Green Berets, stolen the U.S. Army 5th Special Forces Group’s unofficial name of “The Legion” and made as their own.

And above all the United States Army along with the Department of Defense have decided that the 1st SFAB will be issued the hunter green headgear of the elite Green Berets who have earned the right to wear this headgear through their own personal blood, sweat, and tears.

This petition was created to demand that the United States Special Operations Command along with the Department of Defense cease all issuance of the green beret to any and all non-Special Forces qualified persons.

This petition also demands the 1st SFAB cease all usage of Green Beret unit history and heritage as their own, such as the use of the term “Legion” along with the usage of the arrowhead unit patch and the OSS dagger likeness as well.

The wearing of the Green Beret is a symbol of commitment and sacrifice to the men who challenged themselves to be the best of the best in the U.S. Army Special Forces. This honor is earned, never issued.

“You cannot give a soldier self-esteem and pride, he must want it and earn it

by setting high goals and accomplishing those goals with hard work and

Dedication. The beret does not make the soldier. The special forces, rangers, and

airborne troopers make the beret a symbol of excellence.”

Said Wayne Lawley President, Special Forces Association
